Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things.” – Steve Jobs
Many people believe creativity is an inborn trait. In reality, creativity is a skill that must be practiced and developed. To become proficient at an instrument or sport, you have to put in the time practicing. The more time you put into it, the better you'll be. The same thing goes for creativity. The more you make creativity a part of your everyday life, the more creative you will be.
Being creative means to take risks and think outside of the box. Being creative means being different and maybe even a little erratic. It means you're asking questions. Maybe even stupid questions. Creativity means you are an independent thinker, someone who sits down and really wrestles with their thoughts until they come into clarity. A creative person will take risks and be persistent. Many of us have ideas but the truly creative follow through with their thoughts and act upon them.
How can you better embody creativity and discover news ways to develop your ideas? I believe the best way is to make connections.
As the quote from Steve Jobs stated, creativity is to connect two things, to marry two ideas resulting in one beautiful product.
Elon Musk's wife, Justine, once stated:
“Choose one thing and become a master of it. Choose a second thing and become a master of that. When you become a master of two worlds you can bring them together in a way that will a) introduce hot ideas to each other, so they can have idea sex and make idea babies that no one has seen before and b) create a competitive advantage because you can move between worlds, speak both languages, connect the tribes, mash the elements to spark fresh creative insight until you wake up with the epiphany that changes your life.”
In order to develop creativity, you must be able to connect ideas in your mind. To take two known ideas and solve one problem. To integrate ideas from two fields that are seemingly opposite. Developing this skill will take time, it's certainly not something you're born with. But once you start thinking this way, connecting your unique thoughts together, allowing your thoughts to go down obscure paths, you will come to conclusions that no one else has ever come to. You will impact the world through your unique creativity.
So think about what has come before and connect it with what could come next. You have the creativity to begin the next insanely great thing.
